For there is no folly of the beast of the Earth which is not infinitely outdone by the madness of men

Herman Melville, Moby Dick

Taking giant leaps out of the water and crashing back to the sea, the Humpback Whale is uniquely breathtaking. Whilst observed globally, there is a busy migration path along the east coast of Australia. How devastating then, that this gorgeous creature is classified a vulnerable, threatened species in Australia, meaning that they face a high risk of extinction in NSW in the medium-term future.

There are dedicated organisations that are tirelessly seeking the preservation of these majestic beasts (along with other marine life). If you are interested in getting involved, check out the amazing warriors below:

ORRCA (Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia) works to help rescue stranded marine mammals. It is a volunteer organisation and is the only licensed group allowed to be involved in marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation and release.

Sea Shepherd is an independent international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Sea Shepherd uses direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action on the high seas.

Project AWARE is a global movement for ocean protection powered by a community of adventurers. They are a non-profit group who have found a platform to mobilise the world’s divers to protect our ocean.
